History & Specifications
HISTORY
After delivery, the HA-1112-M1L served in the Spanish Air Force as a fighter and multi-purpose aircraft. It remained in service there for a long period of time and was an important tactical component, particularly in the context of Spain’s colonial conflicts in North Africa. Regular military service ended with the phasing out of the aircraft at the end of 1965.
After being decommissioned, many Buchóns ended up in civilian hands or were put into storage. During this period, numerous aircraft were used in film and media productions due to their airworthiness and their still recognizable historical origins. In various historical works, including the classic film Battle of Britain, Buchóns were used to represent Messerschmitt Bf 109s. The later OO-MAF was active in this production, but was used exclusively for scenes on the ground and was not used in flying sequences.
Eric Vormezeele acquired the aircraft in 1985, and it remained in the Vormezeele family’s possession in Belgium for more than 40 years. During this time, the aircraft was preserved by the family and maintained as part of their private collection. After Eric Vormezeele’s death, his sons, Frédéric and Alexandre Vormezeele, continued the project and decided to preserve this special aircraft.
At the end of January 2025, it was officially announced that Flying Legends GmbH had acquired the HA-1112-M1L, OO-MAF. The aircraft has since become part of our historic fleet and is currently undergoing a comprehensive and faithful restoration at FAST Aero. The aim of the project is to restore the aircraft to a high standard, both visually and technically, and to present it at air shows throughout Europe in the future.
The team is basing the restoration on historical models, deliberately retaining characteristic features of the Buchón, such as the wider cowling and the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The work is currently scheduled for completion at the end of 2026.
